Woodland Management Plans

Managing your woodlot typically involves ensuring that you have a Woodlot Management Plan in place, which will be agreed with the landowner and which may be appended to your woodlot lease or licence agreement. In all cases the management of the woodlot will be expected to comply with the UK Forest Standard.

This may take the form of an approved Woodland Management Plan (for woods under 100 ha) which will have to be approved by Scottish Forestry via the forest planning process, and which can then also include approval for thinning and felling operations for the plan period; or it may be a simpler plan agreed between the woodlotter and the landowner in which case separate felling licence approval will need to be in place for any tree felling or thinning that you plan to carry out. In other cases the landowner will already have a suitable approved Long-Term Forest Plan in place for the woodlot area, which will include provision for felling, thinning or other silvicultural activity which you might wish to carry out on the woodlot.
